American super heroes have been attracting many fans lately because of all the movies being made of them: Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Captain America, X-Men and the list goes on and on. According to DC and Marvel, both companies will continue to produce movies base on their characters up til 2020 as of now. DC and Marvel are the two most talked about companies whenever the subject of super heroes comes up.
In the comic world, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Flash from DC, Ironman, Captain America, Spiderman, Hulk, and X Men from Marvel each has their own group of fans… Justice League and The Avengers both have unique storylines attracting millions of people. It’s hard to say which company is better until we enter the movie arena.
Countless negative comments were found on the Internet for the movie Batman vs Superman, yet I still went to the cinema to watch it. Frankly, it was a bit boring during the middle part of the movie, a bit slow. But in my opinion it’s unfair to compare DC with Marvel, especially in the movie world.
Since Disney bought Marvel, the super heroes movies from them were very straight-forward and patriotic. The good guys always win over the bad dudes, the films are suitable for all ages since they added in a lot of humor. DC is a bit different, their characters are usually more dark and serious, the heroes are usually normal human beings to begin with that went through certain tough experience. Hence DC’s characters and plots are more complicated which makes it harder to turn it into an entertaining movie.
The previous 3 episodes of the Batman series actually received a lot of positive comments, unfortunately to pave the road of Justice League, the new director decided to start everything from scratch. The “new” Batman became an even darker Dark Knight, a mid-life crisis man who only likes to fight and has a negative outlook on life. With such a drastic change, it’s normal that some people don’t find the new Batman attractive compare to the previous versions.
Even though the box office sales are good for Batman vs Superman, but it is not considered a good start for DC especially when they are preparing to launch the next movie in line “The Suicide Squad. Hence DC and Universal decided to make some changes to “The Suicide Squad” such as adding more humor to the movie. With the cast not as strong as Batman vs Superman, they have to make the movie more commercialized in order to cater the bigger mass, and this might be the road DC needs to take if their main objectives is box office sales.
Having deeper thoughts on this topics, I think the real reason why Batman vs Superman wasn’t well received is because of one word… “CHANGE”. In order to make their movies with more mass appeal movie companies are willing to drop the dark and serious tone of DC comics by adding humor. Yet this might backfire as consumers will be confused by the change of tone in the movies and for die hard DC fans, this move might throw them off even further, Unfortunately, for profit and universal appeal, many companies not just movie companies will do anything for the word money. For me, I just hope that no matter what they change and how many times they change in the movies, Superman and Batman will stay true to the characters as the ones that grew up with me, I just want the old Batman and Superman.
